Before 3pm Japan time (1 am EST) today, an earthquake measuring 8.4 on the Richter scale rocked the island nation 200 km north of Tokyo. Quickly thereafter, a massive, horrifying tsunami hit Japan's Northeast region. Now a tsunami alert exists for New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and others.
Japan's infrastructure has taken a devastating hit. Highways are empty. Tokyo's proud train lines have stopped. Nuclear power plants have been shut down — one is even experiencing a problem with its cooling system and another is experiencing "fires." At least one oil refinery, as you can see above, is on fire and out of commission for the near future.
